My parents took the boys to Inwood Hill Park in the city last weekend to this Native American Festival. Inwood Hill Park has the only remaining old-growth forest and natural salt marsh in Manhattan. 3,000 years ago it was a hunting and gathering place. Inwood Hill Park, called Shorakapok ("the edge of the river") by the Lenape people, is reputedly where Peter Minuit "purchased" Manhattan in 1626. A giant tulip tree marked the legendary spot of this transaction until 1938. In 1954, the Peter Minuit Post of the American Legion rededicated the site with a plaque at Shorakapok Rock.

We love to teach the kids to respect the earth the way the Native American people do, that everything is alive and we need to take care of it. One of the things the boys and I have gotten in the habit of doing is taking along a plastic bag when we walk Lina so we can pick up all the trash along the way....it's really surprising (and sad) how much we find everyday.
