Eddie has inherited my sickness....he too is a total book freak.
I actually had a free afternoon last week when Christopher stayed a full day at school. I happily spent the whole time at the local library - ALONE! No kids! Wheee!
While I was there I took out a bunch of books that I want to start "rowing" with the boys (see the Five in a Row post). I also took out a few parenting books and ordered two others. I got a call from the library yesterday that one of my books was in (JM it's the Mem Fox one!) so Eddie and I headed over this morning while Chris was at school.
I told Eddie he could pick out a few books for himself. Well, he's as bad as me, there was just no talking him down! He walked out with six books for himself and two for Christopher!
For Eddie:
Bones and the Big Yellow Mystery by David A. Adler
Bones and the Dinosaur Mystery by David A. Adler
Bones and the Cupcake Mystery by David A. Adler
The Komodo Dragon's Jewels by Diane Redfield Massie
The Bookstore Ghost by Barbara Maitland
Dinosaur Hunter by Elaine Marie Alphin
Another thing Eddie & I have in common is we both love to read mystery & ghost stories! He just read Bones and the Dog Gone Mystery and he really enjoyed it so he was very excited to see all those others in the series. He is such a great reader. He reads a book to me every night as part of storytime (Christopher has started doing this too!) and he also loves to read on his own - especially when we arrive early to pick up Christopher from school, he will sit in the car and read and read!
We read a book last night that he took home from the school library called The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins: An Illuminating History of Waterhouse Hawkins, Artist and Lecturer. I thought it was going to be way above their heads but it turned out to be really interesting and we even looked the guy up on the Internet. Once again I was learning right along with them!
Eddie picked out these for Christopher - they really are perfect for him...
Catch that Cat! by Cari Meister
That Bad, Bad Cat! by Claire Masurel
They are the perfect reading level for him and very appropriate since he loves to pretend he's a cat with Noni all the time. But shhhhh, that's their secret!
Last week I took out....
Changing Children's Behaviors Quickly (ahem) It helped me come up with a "Family Contract" which is now hanging on the fridge. The basic outline of the contract is three simple rules - with several sub-rules falling under each.
1) The Hayes Boys Must Respect Mom & Dad
2) The Hayes Boys Must Respect Each Other
3) The Hayes Boys' Hands Must Always Be Where They Belong (you might be surprised how many sub-rules actually fall under this one and how often this rule comes up during the course of a day!)
I also took out...
"Mom, Jason's Breathing On Me!" The Solution to Sibling Bickering by Anthony E. Wolf, Ph.D
I've just started this one and I'm not sure I'm buying his message yet. Sounds like he's saying let them work it out on their own. How can they work it out themselves until they learn the skills to do so? Aren't I supposed to be trying to teach them those skills? But, I'm still reading it and trying to keep an open mind.
Also, Motivated Minds: Raising Children to Love Learning by Deborah Stipek, Ph.D & Kathy Seal. I'm very excited to get to this one!
And today I got Radical Reflections: Passionate Opinions on Teaching, Learning and Living by Mem Fox on the recommendation of my cousin. My cousin also recommended Mem Fox's book Reading Magic to me a while back, which I loved and have recommended to others.
The FIAR books that we will be rowing next are:
Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost and Susan Jeffers
The Giraffe That Walked to Paris by Nancy Milton
All Those Secrets of the World by Jane Yolen
The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf
They are all here...waiting.....
Like I said, Eddie & I suffer from the same sickness!
How wonderful! :-)
